Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky in 1809 but raised in Indiana and became a lawyer, practicing in Illinois state. Lincoln was elected president of the United States in November 1860, shortly before the outbreak of the Civil War and proved to be a shrewd military strategist. He succeeded in abolishing slavery and modernizing the US economy.

Lincoln was a natural born leader. With his ability to command a room, give a powerful speech and negotiate, he is regarded as one of the most brilliant presidents in American history. Even when he attained the position of president, he treated others with honesty, humility, courage, justice and grace.

On April 14 1865, Lincoln was assassinated at Fords Theatre in Washington by John Wilkes Booth, an actor who thought he was helping the South. Lincoln had no prejudices against the Southern people; he was one of the best friends they ever had.
